"He who does not steal from the State steals from his family" Back in the old days of the Iron Curtain life was simple: believers needed Bibles and prisoners needed prayer. Ideology was everywhere. Everyone knew the enemy. Communist tyranny was the evil empire and we worked to help believers who lived under its ideas. Tyranny and abuse of authority caused people to withdraw from public life. Morality collapsed as people stopped taking personal responsibility in community life, even the Church was affected. Even now long after the fall of communism mistrust, fear of responsibility, low initiative, manipulative corruption and cynicism hinder growth. Ideas can hold a terrible power. Karl Marx never held a political office or made much money yet his ideas changed this region and brought untold suffering to generations. He not only changed political systems, he changed the world-view of millions, even those who disagreed with him! Today, 400 million people are looking for hope in countries once dominated by communist theories and power hungry dictators. They look in the super market of western ideas and are discovering the short term satisfaction of consumerism. |
